Abstract

This article is devoted to the presentation of the evolution of the Italian party system after 1993. The sources of its formation can be found during the Italian unifi cation, broken state of the southern and northern. The second party system in the years 1919-1924 and the third party system in the period 1946-1993 was an example of multi-party system with a high level of polarization. After 1993 was in Italy a new political system. He stood out above all the construction of bipolar political competition, multiparty electoral coalitions, cooperating with the parties of extreme views and the alternation of power between the two competing coalitions. The next stage of transformation of the party scene is the emergence of two major political parties after 2007, the center-left Democratic Party and Berlusconi’s People of Freedom. The process of unifying the party, however, accompanied by internal divisions and an impediment to political stability in modern Italy.
