Abstract

The family is the basic social unit in which child‑rearing process takes a long period of time. In this process presence of a father as well as mother and their mutual support is extremely important despite the difference between the roles they perform. In pedagogy there are no significant studies concerning father’s role in the family and his role in child‑rearing process, which may suggest stereotyped attitude to the introduced problem. In the following article the issue of father’s role in the family and functions he performs in his offspring upbringing from ancient to modern times has been raised. Furthermore, the article presents father’s influence on child’s development and consequences of his absence in rearing process.
