Genius loci Podhala i Tatr : rola w kształtowaniu atrakcyjności turystycznej

Abstract

The article discusses the genius loci of the Podhale and the Polish part of the Tatras, and its role in shaping the cultural landscape and attractiveness of regions for the needs of tourism. The selected region represents unique natural values and established cultural patterns (including colorful folk arts, landscapeinspired art and regional architecture). Genius loci is an immaterial formation which adds extraordinary features to the natural space and fosters emotional relations between the man and the landscape. The analysis that was performed (chronological point of view – geographical process) made it possible to distinguish stages in the evolution of spatial patterns and immaterial values of the landscape. Three stages were distinguished in the development of the region: isolation – until the late 18th c., semi‐opening – the 19th and early 20th centuries, and full opening – starting from the late 20th c. The article discusses transformations of the genius loci and its role in creating social relations and tourist attractiveness, as well as threats to immaterial values brought about by globalization. It also presents correlation between the stages of development of the region and tourism area life cycle stages and types of tourist space.
