Abstract

The author discusses some of the reasons of transformations that took place in mentality of the inhabitants of Upper Silesia under the influence of Polish and Polish identity in the second half of the 19th century (indirectly thanks to the railway and Polish press development). He points to the consequences of this situation — among others an attempt to define a national status of Silesians. The study of factors influencing the very changes has become an opportunity at the same time to look at the nature of changes concerning the Polish society at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as the issue of shaping nationality of Polish-speaking inhabitants of Upper Silesia.
