Abstract: | The Piarist Wincenty Skrzetuski (1745—1791) was not only an eminent educator, historian,
lawyer, and political writer of the Stanislavian era, but also a gifted translator, and the overall
assessment of his translation work remains generally favourable. This assessment has been made
on the basis of thorough analysis of his translation of the most brilliant work that Skrzetuski
translated into Polish, Gabriel Bonnot de Mably’s Treatise De la législation ou principes des
loix, published originally in Amsterdam in 1776. Thanks to Skrzetuski’s translation, this treatise
of the French thinker was published in Warsaw in 1783 under the Polish title O prawodawstwie
czyli o pierwszych zasadach praw z francuskiego języka wykład (On Legislation, or: on the Primary
Principles of Law, a Treatise in French). Overall, Skrzetuski’s work on the translation was
beyond reproach, and the described omissions regarded mostly religious matters. It is also worth
to mention that the Polish translator of De la législation ou principes des loix omitted several
passages written by de Mably which concerned the Republic of Nobles. |
