| Abstract: | The “Ghazals” cycle of 1832 represents for Prešeren an anticipation of his later work “A Wreath of Sonnets” and shows the skills of a true poet-virtuoso. Prešeren followed the model of German Romantics with great independence: in his lyrics there are no mysticalmetaphysical elements or Oriental stylization. A Slovenian and European spirit prevails. This work differs from the usual Prešeren’s themes such as unhappy love and pain. The author refl ects here on poetry and on its redeeming function, rather than on the beauty of the protagonist. The connection of two subjects such as love for a woman and love for his country is an original and quite rare trait among Romantics. |
