Abstract

The chapter attempts to analyze, in a multifaceted way, the movie The Wall, which was directed by Alan Parker. With the history of Pink, the main character, as a starting point, the topics of socialization, being brought up by an overprotective mother (in the absence of the father) and close interpersonal relationships are being dealt with. The problems occurring in those areas may be metaphorically seen as bricks in the wall being built by the main character, which makes him feel lonely. The authors also deal with the topics of consumerism, which might serve as a comfortable way of functioning behind the wall, as well as a final consequence of the wall having been built — escaping from freedom, as it has been described by Fromm. The article is concluded by remarks on psychotherapy, which may be a way to tear down (or rather gradually dismantle) the wall.
