Abstract: GIS technologies have been widely applied in almost all scientific fields of work and practical human activities. In the case of environment management, their use is of broad spectrum, including, as a simplest formula, visualization of data on natural world, visualization of pollutant concentrations in the environment and their spatial distribution, site planning and managing environmental processes, hazard monitoring, land use modelling or forest protection. GIS is used for analysis and visualization of various sorts of data, such as flood risk, disease incidence, pest gradation etc. GIS technologies can serve as tools for comprehensive, advanced multi-factor analyses of past and present events, as well as allow to predict and examine future conditions, thus being of extreme importance to estimate natural hazards. The goal of this paper is to identify the research directions in application of GIS technology in environmental protection by reviewing Polish literature. The selection of journals to be investigated is based upon journal profiles and their scientific prestige. Two groups of journals are studied for the 2007-2009 period: those on GIS technology and on environmental protection. Critical analysis and bibliometric study have main been carried out. Due to high differentiation of environmental aspects, it is assumed that classification will be conducted to determine substance contents of articles published in selected journals (Archives of Photogrammetry, Cartography and Remote Sensing; Geomatics and Environmental Engineering; Annals of Geomatics; Archives of Environmental Protection, Ecological Questions, Polish Journal of Environmental Studies).
