Ecology and the Fantastic. The Example of "Le monde enfin" by Jean-Pierre Andrevon

Abstract

This article analyzes Le monde enfin by the French writer Jean-Pierre Andrevon as an example of the relation between the new fantastic and ecology. Adopting canonical fantastic theories as a point of reference, it presents the development of the new fantastic as a genre and Andrevon’s important place in this literary field. Thereafter, it examines the narrative roles of humans and nature in Le Monde enfin in order to demonstrate how the author plays with the conventional definitions of the character and the malevolent phenomenon. As the study strives to prove, Andrevon’s ecological preoccupations strongly influence his literary work. Moreover, the article evokes intertextual references in Le Monde enfin and examines the text in relation to philosophical concepts such as deep ecology and the Gaia hypothesis. El presente artículo analiza Le monde enfin del escritor francés Jean-Pierre Andrevon como un ejemplo de la relación entre lo neofantástico y la ecología. Adoptando teorías canónicas de lo fantástico como punto de referencia, presenta el desarrollo de lo neofantástico como un género y el importante papel de Andrevon en ese campo literario. Posteriormente, el estudio examina los roles narrativos de la naturaleza y el ser humano en Le Monde enfin con el objeto de mostrar cómo juega el autor con las definiciones convencionales del personaje y del fenómeno malvado. Como se intenta demostrar en el presente artículo, las preocupaciones ecológicas de Andrevon influyen fuertemente en su obra literaria. Además, el estudio señala las referencias intertextuales de Le Monde enfin y examina la obra en relación con conceptos filosóficos como la ecología profunda y la hipótesis Gaia.
