Abstract

The paper applies to the city of Katowice, which in the past was a multicultural town, inhabited by Silesians, Germans, Jews and Poles at the same time, and which is today a city of one nation, inhabited by Poles. The aim of the paper was to characterize the cultural heritage left in Katowice by the former German and Jewish inhabitants. The article outlines the history of the development of the city with emphasis on the impact of people representing different cultures on the character of Katowice, presents elements of the cultural heritage left by Germans and by Jews, and discusses the value of this heritage to later generations of inhabitants of Katowice.
