Abstract

The Journey of the Magi was written by T.S. Eliot in August 1927, two months after his conversion to Anglicanism. Some critics believe that the poem represents symbolically the poet’s struggle towards faith. In Eliot’s religious poems one can observe how a biblical event affects the poet’s imagination, provoking him to produce a new reading of it. In the article an attempt has been made to answer the question why Eliot changed the interpretative centre of the biblical pericope. He did not accentuate the Magi’s homage but their journey towards Bethlehem. The pivotal motif of journey can be interpreted from at least four perspectives: (1) realistic journey, (2) the Magi’s spiritual pilgrimage towards God, (3) the Magus’s intellectual travels to comprehend the mystery of Incarnation, (4) the reader’s intertextual journey.
