Abstrakt: | Wojciech Jagielski is one of the most interesting European reporters of the last decades,
a disciple of Ryszard Kapuściński, a careful observer of conflicts afflicting Africa, Central Asia and Caucasus, a witness to breakthrough moments in history (though from the European reader’s point of view they may appear to be rather exotic). The essence of his literary reportage is realised
in its “anti‑mediality”,
primarily distinguished by the reflection inscribed in the text, and the
questions which the writer repeatedly asks: about the role of a human being as an individual in
the world or about the possibility of understanding and describing the considerable, sometimes
insurmountable cultural differences by linguistic means. Due to the use of individual experience
and the exquisitely built narrative, the writer turns his characters’ everyday life into the universal
stories about the contemporary world. |
