Abstract: The need for a multisided approach to complex situations, processes and phenomena related to human functioning in the multicultural world urges pedagogical subdisciplines to open to the trails which do not belong to their canon or paradigm. What is emphasized in this volume are the associations between the issues of social pedagogy and the knowledge acquired in the field of special pedagogy, andragogy, psychology, sociology, anthropology and other sciences. Such an approach results in synergy. An attempt at the integration of pedagogical subdisciplines and other sciences is undertaken in order to establish terminological links. The following categories constitute the integration platforms: the Other, identity, activeness, support, environment. All of them focus on real challenges for education in its different forms in the democratic citizen society which is being created. What is a real and concrete space of man’s daily functioning is the local environment, a specific type of the educational environment. Some particular social practices take place here with the participation of Others – individuals who differ in many respects. Thoughts concerning the activation of individuals, groups and communities in the local environment are situated in the area of social pedagogy and social politics. Enhancing the processes of social integration and increasing individuals’ civil activeness (through building a local forum of cooperation between representatives of environments which shape individual development as well as socio-cultural and economic development of the local community) are important tasks for pedagogy.
