Abstrakt: The article presents mechanisms that led to creation of so‑called “midlle‑literature” in Poland. For many years, there was an undeniable hierarchy in Polish literature. Readers were given either ambitious works, which demanded considerable amount of knowledge, or crummy books earmarked mostly for the popular circulation. Everything has changed in 1989. Political and social transformations that occurred in Poland have seriously reduced the dominant position of highly artistic literature. A new type of literature has appeared along with a new type of reader. Undoubtedly, the most popular Polish writer associated with so‑called “middle‑literature” is Olga Tokarczuk. The presented article includes a case study of translation of novel House of Day, House of Night into Russian language. The conducted comparative analysis concerns two main plots. Fist of them is the attempt to deal with the process of getting old, the second one concerns living in two different orders. According to the author`s mind, the Russian translation conducted by Olga Katrieczko retains core and dynamic of the original. The senses of this literary work were properly interpreted and successfully transferred into Russian ground.
