The article is an attempt to defend the presence of Positivist novels and any other worksthat are not the learners’ interest though being honorably called the classics in the schoolreading lists. The reason for the status quo is a language barrier, and a substantial culturaldistance dividing the reality of the world presented from the modern world, and the fossilizationof the discourse devoted to works from the past deriving from the 19th century textorigins. The solution, as the author claims, should be not the reduction of the school canon tothe latest texts, but the refreshment of interpretation propositions in accordance with currentmethodologies of reading. The very task should be treated as yet another level of the cooperationof the school and academic Polish studies.
