Abstract

This article contains a suggestion of reading Anne of Green Gables from a feminist perspective. In the author’s opinion, the status of the cult novel for girls which Lucy Maud Montgomery’s book enjoys for over hundred years, does not translate into shaping the conducts and worldviews of its readers. In the meantime, the stigmatizing tag of the girlie book which Anne of Green Gables has been attached, should be interpreted as an important reading tip, not only determining the adressees of the novel, but also specifying the main issue of it, i.e. the women’s right to self‑determine and create their own fate.
