Lęk przed książkami o Lwowie

Abstract

The intention of the author of the article is to present the situation of books about Lviv addressed at young people which were eliminated in the period of the Republic of People’s Poland. This is only one category of works that after 1948 disappeared from a reading circulation and in most cases did not come back to readers for political reasons. The causes of reading disfavour are to be found in purge between 1948 and 1954 accepted by the authorities in the first period after war, and the activity of the censorship apparatus. The factors, so typical of the period of the Republic of People’s Poland, most significantly led to the situation in which children did not learn about the twists and turns of Bohaterski miś by Bronisława Ostrowska, Uśmiech Lwowa by Kornel Makuszyński (constituting a literary guidebook in Lviv) or Dzieci Lwowa by Helena Zarzewska. The article shows why books about Lviv evoked such a big fear among the authorities. What is most important, tracing this topic clearly shows that there exists the area of literature which should be reminded of to not only adult readers, but above all children and young people. Besides, the awareness that thanks to these works young people will understand symbolism of Lviv and get closer to the history of Lviv Eaglets is important. Thus, it is worth getting interested in this literature because young readers should not be grown up without knowing the works which seemed to be ideologically inappropriate. Hence, advantages and disadvantages of the very books should be reminded of which constitute our culture and lead into the depths of a national history.
