Abstract

The issue of interculturalism, vividly present in multicultural societies, belongs to important research themes concerned with postmodernity. This article focuses on essays by Jančar, Debeljak, Drakulić, Ugrešić i Čolović and their discourses. The reflection on multiculturalism, interculturalism and the phenomenon of difference in Yugoslavia results in an attempt to identify the most desirable model of multiculturalism – intercultural pluralism based on the mutual recognition of, and respect for, "difference". An agreement which transcends differences requires the skills of harmonizing differences, which, in turn, requires efforts, knowledge and competence as well as democratic social and political structures. All those are possible only in a non-dogmatically organized state. No model of multiculturalism can be developed without transforming an awareness of differences into an awareness of harmonizing differences.
