Abstract

The question of the essence of things, the question "what i s . . . ? " is actually the question which presupposes the answer that something is undobtedly a something, but a something different from what it appears to be, something different (deeper, truer, fuller) from what we ask about asking the ąuestion "what i s . . . ? " The fact that we constantly ask that question is a symptom of what Freud called "epistemophllia" and what Terry Eagleton calls "overreading", a kind of reading whose typical exemple is Othello’s obsession.The deconstructire proposal for the impossibility of the complete interpretation (or reading) of any text - "misreading" - is a kind of therapy of epistemophllia. This proposal also erases the idea of the text as a complete entity or whole.
