Abstract: Fear of death was the subject of consideration of people in ancient times. Now, fear is intensified. Man feels increasingly lonely and helpless against the aging process and dying. The contemporary culture is characterized by an attitude of alienation, not only in relation to society, but also to own nature. Reflecting of this situation is seen as the lack of acceptance of their fate, and an aging of body. Contemporary culture is characterized by instability, which is an expression of controversy around the concept of life, and human dignity. The most relevant perspective on this problem is considered by bioethics. Defining the concept of thanatic fear and medicalisation of life and death I would like to pay special attention to the position occupied by the Polish bioethicists — propose by Kazimierz Szewczyk.
