Abstract: The article, drawing on the text by Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, proposes a novel way of reading a literary text at school, one that objects to institutionalization and compulsion. The pedagogy of delight stirs a natural curiosity about the world in the reader, as well as his or her delight in novelty, propensity for questioning and wondering, passion and desire for discovery, and a capacity to perceive and appreciate beauty. The thrill of delight which accompanies reading is here construed as a prediscursive experience, one that belongs to corporeality and yet leads to a deeper understanding. The success of such a reading is conditioned by the teacher’s own experience of the actual impact of a literary text. Therefore, the author of the article prompts the teacher to assume the role of the professional reader who reads the text aloud and allows the student to remain silent.
