Teaching organ improvisation remains tightly connected with a widely-understood musical
education. Improvisation is a discipline combining the phenomena of the theory of music, history,
stylistics, as well as an instrumental an interpretation technique. It constitutes an important component
of the musical development of organists for whom this type of music activity is still
up-to-date in a didactic process. When working on the development of organists’ improvising
abilities what is a priority is form discipline, shaping the abilities to use a varied texture, harmonious
awareness of the courses, melodic factor, rhythmicity, and playing technique with articulation.
The process of teaching organ improvisation starts from teaching melody composition.
Further work concerns getting to know duet systems and mastery of playing with the use of two
manuals and the pedal keyboard.
At the same time, in the course of exercises, the students deal with tasks within the scope of
different stylistics: the Baroque, Romantic and 20th century one. An important factor is work on the development the apparatus of playing as well as students’ musicality and sensitivity to particular
elements of a music work. Methodology of teaching organ improvisation is tightly connected
with individualization of actions. Working with a student takes into account features of
his/her music personality, style preferences or musical language in each case.
