Abstract

A traditional perception of gender, as a binary category – woman, man, reflects only part of social reality. The paper is devoted to individuals who cannot be traditionally classified because of their differentness. This differentness is manifested in their gender identity, social roles they perform and their gender expression, and often leads to their social stigmatizing or even exclusion. Transgender manifestation and its social reception are presented here in a historical perspective, which enables us to see the evolution of the attitude to the differences, among the stigmatized themselves and in their social environment.
