Abstract

The book Nature, history, existence. In search of a Romantic universe consists of 16 studies devoted to important issues of the Polish pre-November, and national as well as emigration Romanticism of the 1830s and 1840s. The texts bring reflections on the nature and identity of the literature at this time-period, starting from, among other things, relationships of an early Romanticism with sentimentalism, the specificity of realism and anthropology in its first decade, as well as the nature- and history-related issues crucial for the whole culture at that time. The subsequent articles in this volume are devoted to, among others, genological issues, autobiographic tendencies and character creation in Romantic works to metaphysical and mystic tendencies later in the very period, among others, in works by Juliusz Słowacki. Also the attention was paid to national Romanticism and the need to revise the literature of this circle. The book closes with a sketch aimed at shaping the idea of a common Europe in the first half of the 19th century.
