Abstrakt: | The research aim of this work is to examine the way of understanding the notions of STATE,
NATION, HOMELAND by Poles in old centuries (until 16th century). In doing so, the author of
the text bases on the information coded in the language — in the former Polish language. At the
same time, she proposes the analysis of the historical material with the use of a cognitive instrument
applied to the contemporary language in the majority of works.
A detailed analysis covers lexemes which, by their meanings, referred to the notions of
STATE, NATION, HOMELAND in the former Polish language. By means of analysis of dictionary
definitions of excerpted lexemes and their contexts, notion networks are reconstructed,
treated as joint structuralised bases of experience, or in other words, the bases of knowledge interconnected
with one another to which the very lexemes constitute the point of access. At the
same time, the ways of meaning activation are revealed, which points to the way of profiling
