Abstract

The considerations undertaken in this article describe selected aspects of a little known French‑language report written by Waleria Tarnowska during her journey to Italy commenced on 5th of October 1803 and completed at the end of June 1804. The said writings by the young countess Tarnowska were penned in a form of letters to her just under one‑year‑old daughter Rozalia who remained at that time in the home country. By analysing them, the author of the article attempts at eliciting the threads present therein which would clearly diverge from both topics and stylistic shape of other hitherto journey reports coming from Polish cultural circles. Therefore, her attention focuses on emotionally engaged fragments of the daily letters, vouchsafing the very strong bond of a mother and a daughter, which stemmed from the countess’s melancholic psyche, yet to a large extent had also been formed by painful personal experiences, particularly those relating to motherhood.
