Abstract

The work shows play with a sound layer of the language in contemporary child poems. It defines types of games conducted with a receiver: referring to a mimetic power of sounds, imitating real sounds (like in onomatopoeic poems), inspiring for a play in performance (like in language “tongue-twisters”). It also shows how highlighting a sound aspect can entertain the receiver with a semantic value, play with words — often leading to nonsense and humour, how it mediates in an attempt to make reality unreal, freely play with sound and thing qualities, and how it reveals the language qualities in this game. The article also accentuates the fact that playing with sound and semantics, though requires sensitivity to word and its melody, an excellent sense of humour, the ability to look critically at reality and common sense, fits in children’s reception capacity. What makes it easier for them is referring to available codes, referring to thematic fields especially close to children.
