Zarys dziejów osady huty „Pokój” w Nowym Bytomiu

Abstract

The history of this settlement is presented against the background of the township of Czarny Las, in whose territory grew up Nowy Bytom. The genesis of this place stretches back to the XIII century although it was only really settled from the end of the XVIII century. In effect the „Pokoj” metallurgical plant settlement grew up in the eighteen eighties. It was built for the workers and overseers employed in the plant. Following World War I, as a result od the Silesian Insurrections, Czamy Las became incorporated into Poland under the new name of „Nowy Bytom”. The period after World War II saw a slow process of social and material degradation of the settlement. The majority of the former residents moved to more modem housing estates, abandoning the dilapidated, substandard buildings. Due to this the district lost its working class settlement character and has become today a gathering place for people from dregs and outskirts of society.
