Abstract

The chapter is devoted to electronic journals and their role in scientific and social communication. It presents a definition of e-journals, their classification according to the form, and the history of these publications in Poland and abroad. The advantages and disadvantages of electronic journals are discussed in detail. Described are also services making journals available and consortia, in which readers in Poland can use tens of thousands of tides. Polish electronic journals in the field of library and information science are characterized and free web services providing articles in open access are distinguished. The final part of the paper underlines the growing importance of these journals because of the possibilities of making them available to a wide audience through a global network.
