Szesnastowieczne oprawy z krakowskiej szkoły introligatorskiej na przykładzie kolekcji z Biblioteki Jasnogórskiej : wybrane problemy

Abstract

The aim of this study was to select and describe the sixteenth-century book covers from the historical collection of books in the Library in Jasna Góra, which were made in Cracow bookbinding workshops. From over 13,000 manuscripts stored in this collection, two hundred bindings of the sixteenth – century origin were selected for further studies. The next area of studies is to make the list of Crakow bookbinders of that time and location of their workshops in the city. The original materials and publications discussing the activities of the sixteenth-century community in Crakow were the basis of the studies. This work contains methodological considerations and terminology connected with bookbinding and it eventually focuses on the ways of book covers description and cataloging. According to the model of binding decriptions which has been proposed, 12 examples of Cracow school bookbinding origin were described. Both the objects themselves, as well as their number were regarded as an attempt to represent the whole set, which consists of two hundred units. Monks from Jasna Góra showed great care to protect the monastery works stored in their library. It was very important to them to let the best skilled and sophisticated masters of craft work with their collection. Both bindings made by native masters and decorative details can be compared to the works from Europe's leading typographic centers.
