Abstract: Guards units existed in all the countries of Europe since the Middle Ages. He then played the role of the monarch’s personal bodyguard and his palace. Only in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, their role has grown enormously, making the formation Guards on the European continent. Times of the First World War put an end to most of these formations. In today’s Europe, only a few countries can afford to maintain formation Guards. Some of them, as in the case of the Kingdom of Sweden acts as a Representative Company, in others, in turn, serves as a full-fledged line combat unit. The purpose of my paper is to present the history, tradition, belonging to the existence and operation of existing units Guards existing inter alia, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Russian Federation, the Kingdom of Belgium and the Republic of Croatia.
