Ku nieskończoności : uprzestrzennione twarze z projektów Jerzego Juka-Kowarskiego

Abstract

The exhibition of works by Jerzy Juk-Kowarski made from digitally remade face pictures, from the costume projects of 3 adaptations realized by a stage designer with Jerzy Jarocki (Rewizor [An inspector], Zmierzch [Dusk]) and Jan Skotnicki (Opera za trzy grosze [The threepenny opera]) was presented in Ośrodek Pracy Twórczej in Wigry in summer 2006. Selected fragments of the projects subject to a computer transformation, the objects not fully defined in the ontological status, and, at the same time, belonging and not belonging to different realities, are clearly placed in the space between a document and an art, a representation of a text and a simulation of a scenic adaptation, drama and theatre. As small parts of the projects of theatrical costumes, they are not only the evidence of adaptations realized 20 years ago, a document of the stage designer's work, a record of his struggles with art texts and co-creation of the performance, but also the effect of making a finished work a transformation resulting from the opportunities the computer provides. A movement from an emphasis on the costume to face, in the course of processing the projects, is entangled in the antagonistic processes of destruction and construction, fragmentation and exaggeration, rejection and exposition. Making faces more spacious is connected with a simultaneous ignorance of the costume and body silence. The face of the character remains excluded from the continuum of reality presented in the project and by means of outlining new frames, it receives an extra, and new semantic dimension.
