Plany przestrzeni we wczesnych dramatach Jarosława Iwaszkiewicza

Abstract

The analysis of space concerns the early dramas by Iwaszkiewicz. These involve: Samobójstwo [Suicide] (1912), Bal u księżnej Belwederskiej [A ball at a belvedere princess] (1920), Kardynałowie [Cardinals] (1918 — 1922), Kwidam (1921) and Złodziej idealny [An ideal thief] (1923 — 1924). The early dramas by Iwaszkiewicz, in their thought layer, incorporate the ideas close to the ones realized by the Poznań group Zdrój and the Warsaw Skamander. They are written under the influence of the author's fascination with playwright by Oscar Wilde, Stanisław Wyspiański and Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. He is familiar with the poetics of a grotesque and literary drama, a serious romantic comedy, but also futuristic pantomimes and the poetics of a carnival show. In a dramatic perspective, Iwaszkiewicz when constructing the space, tests various conventions, derives from experiences of the avant-garde trends at that time (futurism, expressionism), as well as from painting and music. The space always makes him the place for considerations on beauty, art, life, death and love. The periods of days and nights constitute eventful, emotional and romantic situations in which the author-creator of his own world of values, admiration, passions and obsessions hides.
