dc.description.abstract | The content contained in the introduction is a preview of the issues raised in the text. The thesis on image
and text synergy and its importance in the context of visual communication design and education are enhanced.
Keywords such as the need to describe the world, the need for beauty, the message, the fine art, the
meaning of the synergy of the image and the text in the educational context. At the end there is a mention
of the useful, didactic function of the diploma project.
Chapter 1. begins with the statement that culture is communication, which is supported by examples from
the literature on semiotics. A fragment of text contains concepts such as: sign and its functions, cultural
codes, relationship between word and image. The importance of the role of the image in the communication
process has been emphasized. The first part of the dissertation is the search for synergy of images and
text based on historical examples and literature: Bible, Bibles Pauperum; Describes the oldest examples of
education with the help of the image – Orbis sensualium pictus by Jan Amos Comenius and his views on
self-education of man. The Gutenberg Galaxy – by Marshall McLuhan’s and his „imaging culture”, which is
the starting point for the search for synergy of text and image – based information synergies in computer
– based information technology, is linked to the emergence of the first groundbreaking and intuitive interfaces
designed to support operating systems.
Chapter 2. is a chronological description of selected examples of image and text synergies and visual communication,
influencing the development of abstract thinking, which in essence means the development
of the graphic design. The topics covered are the origins of the writings of Adrian Frutiger, Egyptian hieroglyphics,
Ptolemy’s maps, the Cartesian system, the veritable drawings of Leonardo da Vinci treated as the
first examples of infographics, the graphs of William Playfair, or breakthroughs in the history of projects by
Otto Neurath (ISOTYPE, Modern Man in the Making, Harry Beck (map of London Underground) and Otl
Aicher (Pictograms of sports disciplines and DOT Pictograms).
Chapter 3. is a form of author’s commentary supplementing a diploma project: Non-linear history of 20th-century
graphic art, which uses the idea of hypertext. The aim of the project is to organize and consolidate the
knowledge of graphic design in an accessible way, which facilitates the students’ absorption of relevant
issues. The project has an open and transparent form, using selected passwords. Illustrative material based
on graphic quotations is an important complement. The project is intended to contribute to the intensification
of the activity of self-education students and to target them in the areas of graphic design. The
second part of the paper also includes a description of my experiences and observations regarding my own
education and work with students. The chapter closes the reference to the book Olga Drenda Polish Spiritology.
