Abstract: The paper has been divided into five parts describing five main faktors on which the shape of Stanisław' Baranczak’s poems relies directly. Baroque — baroque tradition — lays dow'n the rules governing the „style” of his poetry. Language — consciousness of material — defines the rules of attitudes tow'ards other texts, also non-literary ones. Political context determined by the poems is the most important element shaping their ideological relations. The attitude tow'ards the output of generation '68 — generational setting — constitutes a factor motivating artistic choices in the current moment of literary life. Last, the consciousness of his ow'n biography consists a rule w'hich forces some solutions in the personal relations arrangement of Baranczak’s poems. Parts devoted to baroque stylistics in Baranczak's poetry start with a thorough inspection of the tiniest elements of the text. Mention is made of manieristic means of expression, w'hich are to recall a picture of the baroque mentality: oxymoron, paradox, antithesis, peryphrasis, striking metaphor. On the plan of artistic language these tropes serve the autopresentation of the „subject — a virtuoso of poetic playing”. On the plan of imagination they serve outlining a picture of the w'orld torn betw'een the antinomies: of life and death, of freedom and constraint, of permanence and changeability. Baroque characteristics of the means of expression has been then checked in the course of analyses of bigger units. What is observed first is a concept as a model of constructing an utterance, pointing at a vision of the w'orld w'hich cannot be described by a simple polar structure, described profoundly in the catalogue of oppositions. Final exemplification of the „baroque characteristics” of the discussed poems is being done the texture of a „sonnet”. The part of the dissertation which refers to metalinguistic problems is built — like the baroque part — on the principle of expanding the circles of description: from the tiniest elements, phenomena, to interpretations of whole poems representing an integrated model. The introductory phase of this part of the dissertation sums up w'hat has been know'n hitherto about the „linguistic" roots and rudiments of Baranczak's poems. The rudiments of the poetic language of the so called linguistic poetry are analysed. The cannonical trick of poets-linguists: a linguistic metaphor understood as an intentional phraseological-syntactic modification is discussed. The further stage of the treatise brings a reflection on the parody o f non-literary forms of utterance as a consequence of usage of „linguistic” tricks. In the part containing comments on the metalinguistic character of Stanisław' Baranczak's output the main subject of analysis is the so called ..phraseological concept” — a structure being a linguisticly modified embodiment of the vanguard poetic standard. After the description of the „literary character” of Baranczak’s poems the dissertation aims at show'ing the relation between poetry and a series of non-literary contexts seen as a factor co-organiz ing the poetic text. The first of them is the „political context”. Again, what undergoes the analysis is the language, this time .somebody else’s w'ords". The three, most often introducted into Baranczak’s texts and strange for the subje ct-matter of his poetry, languages, turned out to be: the language of „the man in the street”, the language of a secret service official and the language of political propaganda. These languages are at the same time the main denotations of the reality created in the poems. The dissertation divides the elements of reality, called by the poems, into sectors of described w'orld: showy w'orld of politics, sector of organized constraint and sector of commonplaceness. In this chapter the effect of the interpretation is the portrayal of the picture of world vitiated by the syndrome of totalitarism. The attempt to recognize fully the rules organizing the poetic tissue of Ba rahcz ak’s poems required d ia llin g the features of a wider literary structure: poetry of generation’68. Generational context has been acknowledged to be one of the most important factors which influenced the shape of Baraticzak’s text. The generational background is noticed not only in articulating bonds within the group but also in the community of the poetic language. A part of the treatise is devoted to discussing the collection of favourite tricks used by poets of Baranczak’s generation. Functioning of these tricks is later seen in the process of interpretation of Stanisław Baranczak’s elegies. In the further part of the treatise the process of taking over by „a generational poem” diction of a poet from outside the generation — Tadeusz Rożewicz. The last part of the dissertation inspects the consequences of the individual biography of Stanisław Barańczak. The biography turned out to be a factor inscribing his poems into the romantic tradition. We can trace three stages of its manifestation: 1) the stage of a „romantic hero”, 2) the stage of ethic valorization of heroism postulated at the previous stage, 3) the stage of bearing consequences: emigration. As a result of such introduction of changes in relations between a poetic biography and tradition of Polish romanticism the possibility of observing the evolution of Baraticzak’s poetry in the scope of outlook on life has occurred. The formula of „Promethean atheism” or „humanism” has been replaced by the consciousness of the „ultimate reference system” , „Absolute horizon”, which may turn out to be God himself.
