Abstract

The study focuses on the elements of the image propaganda made by the Roman rulers of the time 253–268 and refers particularly to „family groups” representing members of the three generations of the Valerianus dynasty. The image propaganda was to spread the idea of the stability of the dynasty reign and the profits arising from it for the state. Its range is primarily documented in the numismatic sources that combine into one representation the portraits or figures of the dynasty members belonging to different generations. They also confirm the caesura of the year 260 after which only Gallienus remained. The analysis of the numismatic material suggests, however, that the emperor Gallienus had a natural successor in the person of his next offspring.
