Abstract: The narrators in The Word and the Flesh present history as a bunch of threads, sequences of events, which are dynamic, opened and discontinuous. This means breaking away from the narrative which is focused on the plot itself. At the same time the authors of the letters offer their readers some kinds of potential narratives, trying to convince them, that a romance intrigue, and later a spy intrigue are the superior rules which dictate and explain the events in the novel’s world. The authors of the letters underline, that the credibility of the suggested plots is not related to the level of their probability, but their attractiveness and usefulness from the addressee’s perspective. Emplotment leads to fictionalization of history, whereas the category of fiction (dream, illusion), is not discarded in the novel, receiving its pragmatic, historical and anthropological sanction. For fiction (dreams, illusions, beliefs etc.) is an inseparable part of human history.
