Abstract

The works of Antonina Domańska (1853-1917) are still popular. It seems that the author’s popularity results from a few important factors. First, she was familiar with child psychology. Second, she mastered the art of talking about a period by describing its culture. Third, in her books she granted her characters the status o f the most important figures, directly responsible for the plot. Such characters were not omniscient; they needed a reader who would support them in overcoming obstacles or who would share the good moments. Domańska constructs the cultural background by describing elements characteristic o f the culture of a particular period, as well as by describing actions of the characters. Barbara Pytlos discusses the descriptions o f architecture in the following novels: Historia żółtej ciżemki, Trzaska i Zbroja, Krysia bezimienna. Architecture has got certain specific communicative abilities, as well as its own information system, which in Domańska’s novels in clear.
