Abstrakt: | Zofia Rogoszówna (1881-1921), author and translator of books for children, is
completely forgotten nowadays, although she used to be one of the greatest Polish writers
for young readers. She created excellent psychological portraits of children from
various communities, in their earliest childhood. Vividly sketched, with humour and
emotions, they offer fascinating insights into young characters {Pisklęta). All the characters
are presented in their homes - sometimes a cottage, sometimes a manor house - surrounded
by their parents; they grow up peacefully, admiring the world around them.
Rogoszówna contributes to the beautiful and reflective trend in Polish literature
for children which emphasizes the importance of home and the tragedy of losing it
(Dziecinny dwór). Home unites the symbolism of a nest, motherland and scared space.
Because of the parents’ attempts, it is safe and warm, lasts for ages in the same
shape. Home is presented from a child’s perspective and that is the reason why it is
described in rapture. In Polish literature for children, Dziecinny dwór is undoubtedly
one of the most beautiful and most moving descriptions of a family nest.
The writer published some minor works, e.g. Wesoły ludek or Kolorowe bajeczki,
W słoneczku, and most importantly Dzieci pana majstra, which was published posthumously
(four editions before and two after the war). The plot of the tales contains mischief
which is hard to imagine. Rogoszówna was also a precursor of collecting children’s
folklore — songs and games - so that they could be preserved for next generations.
In the book Sroczka kaszkę ważyła. Gadki dziecięce spisane z ust ludu i wspomnień
dzieciństwa, she published a few dozen texts which are authentic examples of
children’s folklore. |
