Abstract

The author draws our attention to one of the problems raised by the discussed poem, namely the way of representing the Chmielnicki Uprising. Twardowski’s purpose was not only to record the events of the 1648-1655 period, he strove to explain them in a historical and philosophical perspective. The conflict with the Cossacks he interpreted in the spirit of providentialism, presenting it as a ‘scourge of God’. In his considerations, Twardowski also included some important ingredients of the Polish nobility’s ideology, such as the myth of the ancestors’ sober life, the idea of Poland as a chosen nation. The historio-philosophical attempt at a general vision the contemporary events is signalled by a poetical imagery, the use of aquatic motifs, fire metaphors, biblical allusions etc.
