Abstract

In this article the cognitive semantic concept of the linguistic prototype has been applied to the study of how secondary speech genres are shaped. One of such secondary genres is the travel report, which has been characterised on the basis of its organisation (initial and final components). style elements and function. Similar studies have revealed some tendencies in the evolution of literary forms that lead to the shaping of new speech genres. The article proves that the assumptions found in postmodernist linguistic methodologies, e.g. cognitive semantics, may be useful in diachronic studies of the evolution of language messages. It is thus possible to combine the methodologies of semantics, text linguistics and linguistic genology.
