Abstract

One of the results of the globalisation of the market and the growing pressure for competitiveness is that the practice of mergers and take-over bids has become widespread in Europe, whereas it has been so far particularly typical of the United States. From a formal point of view, we distinguish horizontal, vertical mergers and the form of the conglomerate. Apart from the mergers that have been agreed upon by the interested parties, we may also observe the so called „hostile mergers.” Mergers are justified from an economic point of view by the so called synergetic effect, the lowering of transaction costs, diversification of production, and an increase in the marks potential of the new company. The growing popularity of mergers and take-overs in Europe cannot, however attract only favourable comment. One of its effects will be the intensification of th. already great problems with high unemployment, and the growing monopolisation in many branches of economy.
