Abstract

The introduction and the ending of The new card of health care workers, which was released by the Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers, recall the Hippocratic Oath. The introduction also reminds us the evangelical parable of the good Samaritan. This article indicates that these references are not simply a reminder of those ancient texts important for medical ethics. Quoting the Hippocratic Oath and the parable of the Good Samaritan shows their timeliness. These well-known texts synthesize many detailed issues raised by bioethics and medical ethics, described in detail in The new card of health care workers and, perhaps most importantly, outline the formation of the conscience of medical workers, which should take two courses: through ethical reflection, carried out on the rational plane and by exploring on the level of faith the morał message that comes from Christian revelation proclaimed by the teaching of the Church.
