Abstract

Reflecting on the place of art in modernity, the author seeks for answers to the following questions: Who is modern artist? What is the place of art in modernity? What are its characteristics? The author highlights the need for moving the borders in art, as ideas of democratization of art seem far too narrow and constrained as regards it independent status. Most often modern artists turns to be critics, art historians, custodians of art, sociologists of art, and artists to a lesser extent. Contemporary artists are constrained by many market barriers as well as tasks that they are supposed to accomplish. The author puts the emphasis to artistic freedom and democratization of art.
