Abstract

Contemporarily the pastoral landscapes have a relict character. The changing socio-economic conditions make it impossible to keep them in their original form. In Poland the extensive sheep husbandry is used more and more often for the nature and pasture landscapes conservation. This solution has been used in European countries for many years. It has great importance, not only for maintaining the diversity of the natural environment, but also for the local preservation of traditions, the functioning of the local economy and improving the quality of life. This view on the importance of animal husbandry fits in the multifunctionality of the agriculture concept. This concept is a necessary condition for the implementation of sustainable development.
