Abstract

The Odra River is one of the basic components of the urban landscape of Wrocław, being not only the city as natural protection, but also a convenient transportation route. And although the Odra has been changing its course throughout the history, the city has always adapted to those changes, thus creating its unique character, which is strictly connected with its river. the Wrocław Hydrotechnical System is one of the most visible hydrotechnical solutions in the city as landscape. The first proceedings related to organization of the system date back to the early Medieval times, when all necessary work was done to lift and regulate water in the river bed as it was at that time. Proceedings related to sailing accessibility of the city and the adjacent areas played important part for the current shape of the Wrocław Hydrotechnical System. The work lasted over a hundred years and was carried out in stages. Nowadays, following large-scale restoration proceedings, it is possible to notice in the landscape clear components of the old hydrotechnical infrastructure, which is becoming an increasingly important tourist attraction at present.
