The aim of the article is to show changes within an educational offer in the Silesian
voivodship (previously Katowice) and educational aspirations of the population (students
First, the basic notions used in the article and useful for further analysis , that is education
as value and socio -cultural wealth were defined. An empirical part analysed an educational
system in the period of a real socialism and its role in determining directions of education.
Next, changes that took place in education in the period of system transformation, an emphasis
being put on the tertiary education, were presented.
The second part of the article analysed changes in educational aspirations that were observed
in Silesia in the 1990s. The very aspirations in the period of a real socialism were not
high, however, increased a lot in the period of a system transformation. In conclusion, the
model of the stages of development in education in the Silesian voivodship was presented.
