Abstract

The popularity of the church song Kto się w opiekę..., connected with the cult of Divine Providence, inspires for doing the research on the functioning of this work in source traditions. An unquestionable advantage when popularising singing is an inspired Biblical text — Psalm 91, in a poetical phrase translated by Jan Kochanowski, with a certain modernization in spelling. A clear domination of this text in collections of church songs is noticed. Cantionale and song books of a Poland-wide influence contain basically one melodic version of the song, popularized in Śpiewnik kościelny by Mioduszewski and numerous editions of Śpiewnik kościelny by Siedlecki. In Silesia, on the other hand, apart from this version, another melody appearing in a few variant versions, both in the 19th and 20th century source and live tradition enjoys special popularity. The research proves the ecumenical role of the song Kto się w opiekę..., still present in Evangelic cantionals, too.
