Abstrakt: | A spectrum of performer’s actions is the consequence of the role as an intermediary in the communication process, understood as conveying the composer’s musical idea to the listener, and their place in communicative triad: sender – transfer – receiver. The performer should aim at artistic truth, which means conforming with the composer’s intention. The performer (the “interpreter”, as it were) is allowed a lot of leeway since musical notation is symbolic, rough and does not include all the performance parameters. Nevertheless, the performer should avoid over-interpretation, that is adding meanings alien to a particular composition The performer
also has to take into consideration listener’s perception abilities and properties, which
will enable optimal reception of the composition. When creating the concepts of performance
the interpreter should take into account and be guided by the composer’s aesthetic attitude.
For Witold Lutoslawski’s musical output the key stylistic determinants are: the psychology of
perception and resulting from it mastery of formal structure, sensitivity to harmonic colour,
appropriateness and accuracy of means used by him, embodied meaning and internal logic of
musical expression. These principles should be also reflected in the performance interpretation
of his compositions as only then can it be coherent, appropriate, and hold aesthetic values in
conformity with the composer’s intention. This work, in reference to Lutoslawski’s compositions,
suggests using one’s knowledge in psychology of perception during the whole interpretation
process – from creating the concepts of the performance to sound production. |
