Abstract

The article’s subject are enticements to reading, which were included into old editions of sermons by Jakub Wujek, directed to prospective reading audience by the author himself as well as by other persons who determined the final shape of the editions in question. What is the central point of interest in the article is the communicative potential of the peritextual messages that co‑created editorial framework of the said homiletic volumes as well as facilitated the introduction of works authored by the Jesuit preacher into readership. The analysis encompasses chosen elements of external delimitation that were used in case of eight Old‑Polish editions, such as: titular formulas, censorship approvals, dedicatory letters, prefaces, and poems recommending the work. Special attention is devoted to strategies of winning the audience’s benevolence for postils of the Jesuit writer. Final remarks regarding the 19th‑century methods of advertising reeditions of the 16th‑century author’s sermons, complement the study.
